Lampetia the Luminous
oil on panel, silver and amber adornment (Kamil Staszczak) · 40 × 50 cm · 2026
The first painting of the triptych “The Sunken Heart”

Triptych · Anastasiya Markovych × Kamil Staszczak
Three oil paintings, 40 × 50 cm — “The Sunken Heart”, “Phaethusa the Shining” and “Lampetia the Luminous” — adorned with silver and natural amber. One story: of the tears of the Heliades that turned into amber.
Second painting · the finished work
„There is something of a Byzantine icon in this painting, something of a jeweller’s masterpiece, and something of my own imagination. The delicacy of a woman’s beauty meets here the warmth of amber, the cool gleam of silver and the mystery of the sea — the tears of the Heliades.”
The “Sunken Heart” of the title is a magnificent piece of amber, larger than a hand, set in silver by Kamil Staszczak and resting in the woman’s hands. The framed painting can be seen at the gallery in Częstochowa.

On Amber, the Tears of the Heliades
a mythological poem · Albert Jerka
„Pleasing to young women: pearls, shells, little birds, the Tears of the Heliades that are called amber, and flowers shimmering with colour”
And Phaethon the Radiant stepped upOnto the wondrous chariot of Helios, wrought in gold and in Vulcan’s silver,He tore the golden reins from his father’s hands; the goddesses cried out in joy,Phaethusa the Shining and Lampetia the Luminous — sisters born of the Sun,Loosing their hair in the golden gleams of dawn, they began to dance,Not knowing they were chasing him to his death with their laughter and song.
Anastasiya of the rosy fingers, beloved of the goddesses, as yet unborn,Who five thousand years hence would summon back the goddesses’ faces —Taking up her brush, she marked the horses’ brows with the golden paint of the sun:Eous the Shining, Pyroeis the Fiery, Aethon the Glowing, Phlegon the Blazing
Neighed their heat at the sky and struck the gates with their hooves. The horses felt their freedom — and bolted from the eternal ruts, carrying off the Sun,Phaethon the Radiant grew pale, and his knees trembled with sudden fear,He knew not where he was, nor where he was heading —Swept away by the force of the fiery horses, wrapped in thick smoke.
A great part of the sky was already behind him, a greater still before his eyes,He looked toward the west he would not reach, and toward the east he had passed.Athos burns, Taurus burns, Etna burns with redoubled flames,The Alps, the Apennines, the Caucasus are ablaze, and Olympus, greater than them all. Then he saw the Scorpion — a monster stretched across two Stars of Heaven,Its pincers bent in a double arc, tail and arms flung wide across the void,Dripping with black venom, threatening with its curved sting —An icy dread stole his senses, and the reins fell from his hands.Half-burned, Phaethon the Radiant plunged, pierced by a blazing thunderbolt,From his father’s chariot into the depths of the sea, into the churning swell,And to this day the sea drives a heavy vapour skyward from the burning wound.
The daughters of Helios, Phaethusa the Shining and Lampetia the Luminous,Transformed into slender poplars, shed vain tears without respite,Clear drops from their weeping boughs fall as amber into the depths of the seas.
Anastasiya of the rosy fingers, born after the ages, took up a great piece of amber,It glowed in her palm, it breathed with life; she heard the neighing of a steed, Eous the Shining,From memory she summoned the faces of the goddesses, Phaethusa the Shining and Lampetia the Luminous,And the Sunken Heart — which she held in her hand — she painted,Kamil the amber-smith, intricate master of resin, adorned the goddesses’ faces with their own tears.

About the collaboration
Anastasiya Markovych × Kamil Staszczak
Anastasiya Markovych’s painting is joined with natural amber and jewellery elements composed by Kamil Staszczak of the Amber Museum in Kołobrzeg. Here amber is not an ornament added to the painting — it is part of it, sunk into the painted layer.
It is a dialogue between painting and matter: between the light of oil paint and the light that the resin of the Baltic has carried within it for thousands of years. Between the myth of the tears of the Heliades and contemporary art, which reads that myth anew.
